I think that I have found the gorget that I want to make. It’s been interesting looking for a pattern or even a finished product that I would like to use. I never really wore a gorget for the longest time since my helm comes down low on my neck and until last year, I was using a butted ring camail that was quite stiff for how flexible it still was. This protected my neck quite well, but was a pain to keep from rusting. But when I went to the new flat ring riveted mail last year, I needed a gorget. The one I have is working well enough, but it isn’t period appropriate for me, and lets face it, it’s functional but it has it’s problems. And with the new armor that I am working on, functional one won’t be as sexy.
Thank you to the armorers at http://www.onlinearmory.com for the inspiration. I think it has a lot of potential for being simply elegant. It has a lot of surface area to be decorated or etched and I find that I must build one or have one built for me.
The full process that they list for building is located at : http://www.onlinearmory.com/customer/kennyb/index.htm with details of a few other pieces of armor made for the same client.
Soon, my precious….soooon!
